Affordable housing for all Australians is Kerrie’s passion. Since the mid 1980s, house prices have risen faster than real incomes resulting in an affordability gap for those on low or moderate incomes who are unable to buy in the inner suburbs of Australia’s larger cities.
But studies show that affordable housing brings about economic growth for all. Research from the Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute (AHURI) shows that, in order to grow, a functionally efficient urban economy requires an adequate supply of workers in both highly skilled, high paid occupations and low skilled, low paid jobs—often in the service, transport and manufacturing sectors.
Failing to develop affordable housing can result in recruitment difficulties in lower paid (but functionally necessary) occupations and higher wages to offset high housing or expensive commuting costs.
The research argues that polarised housing may destroy the employment mix required for globally competitive production in the high housing cost, high income jobs zone at the central core of our big cities. As a result, regional and national economies are affected by lost growth, unresponsive labour markets and increased welfare costs.
